Are you mulling laser hair removal on your body? Read this
first!
Most women battle with body
hair on a daily basis. Visible body hair can limit your clothing choices and
give your skin an unseemly appearance. So you may try waxing or shaving to
remove the hair, but these are temporary measures.
You decide to undergo laser
hair removal for permanently hair-free skin. But before you do, here are 7
facts you probably didn’t know about the process:
You can’t show up for your appointment with long hair.
You might think that showing
up for laser hair removal with furry skin is a good idea, but it’s not. Long
hair growing out of the skin only makes the session go longer and slower than
usual. The laser beam can penetrate the skin faster if the hair is shorter. The
best thing to do is shave the skin two days prior to the appointment, so you
can a small stubble for the appointment.
No tanning and no creams before the appointment.
The laser beam will hurt your
skin if it is tanned. Tanned skin is normally a little more fragile than usual,
so subjecting it to laser hair removal is not a good idea. Another bad idea?
Applying a cream on the skin just before the session. The dermatologist will
have to clean the skin completely before starting.
It’s not a magic process, so be patient.
Most women think that a
single session of laser hair removal will rid them of their hair forever.
That’s not how it works. The laser light beam turns to heat inside the skin and
burns off the hair follicles. This retards their growth. Over repeated
sessions, the hair follicles are unable to create new hair and simply die out.
Smooth, hair free skin may take several sessions to finally become a reality.
You can’t schedule a full body hair removal session.
Don’t believe a dermatologist
that says they can remove all your body hair in one session. Your skin can
absorb only limited amounts of the laser light. The underarms and bikini line
may be done quickly, but the arms, legs and back require separate sessions.
Your results depend on your hair and skin.
While some women are totally
hair free skin in just three months, others may require over a year before
their skin becomes hair free. Don’t compare your results with another woman’s.
It’s not completely pain free.
Though laser hair removal
will not plunge you into a world of torment, it takes some getting used to.
Some women describe each blast of laser on the skin as repeated pings from a
rubber band.
Post-session care is super important.
More than pre-session care,
you must focus on post-session care so that your skin does not get agitated
further. Post the laser hair
removal, your skin might feel raw and
look reddish. Slather on a dermatologist-recommended moisturiser thrice a day.
Do not go out in the sunlight, and cover your skin with loose cotton clothing.
