Waxing down there: Here’s how you do it

Get the low down on giving yourself a bikini wax at home – yes, you really can!

Every woman has different skin and hair composition than another. If one has luxuriant hair on her head, another has hair fall. While one has smooth skin, another has to struggle against body hair. And while some have hair only on their limbs, others have a raging bikini line that peeks out of the sides of their underwear!

Women who need to remove the hair from their bikini line often go the salon to get it done. It is not advisable to use shaving razors on the sensitive skin in the area, since the stubble is prickly and itchy and can make you uncomfortable. You could use depilatory creams to remove the hair, but it often grows back within a few days. The best long term hair removal option is waxing.

As time consuming as it is, most women still prefer to go to the salon to get a bikini wax. But did you know that you can give yourself a bikini wax at home? More to the point, do you know how to do a bikini wax?

How to do a bikini wax at home
Whether you use hot wax or cold wax, one thing to remember is that it’s going to hurt a little. The skin in the bikini area is quite thin and sensitive, so when the wax pulls the hair off, it will make the skin a little red and sore to the touch. The act of pulling the hair out from the roots also causes some discomfort. However, all these signs will disappear after a few minutes. You can apply moisturiser on the skin to soothe it.

·         Start by exfoliating the skin at least one hour before waxing. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and surface dirt. It also opens up the skin pores so that the hair comes away easily.

·         Apply a numbing cream to the area before waxing, if you anticipate a lot of pain. Or you can take a painkiller to minimise the pain you will feel.

·         Heat the wax (if using Oriental spa wax or ordinary hot wax) to the desired temperature. Take a blunt edged knife (a butter knife will do) and apply the wax evenly on the skin. If you are using Oriental wax, you do not need separate cloth strips to remove the wax. Pull off the wax against the direction of hair growth in one swift motion. Do not apply wax on the same area right away to remove stubborn hair; tweeze it away.

·         If you are using cold wax strips, rub the strip (still inside its plastic cover) between your hands to loosen the wax a little. Apply the strip directly on the skin and pull away in one swift motion.
