3 mysteries of dry skin solved!

Your dry skin throws up strange surprises – we decode three of them.

Those with oily or combination skin often envy other skin types. But apart from normal skin, even dry skin does not have much to be proud of. It can be difficult to care for, and it comes with its own set of problems. Here’s looking at three dry skin mysteries and their solutions:

#1 My skin always feels stretched. Dry skin becomes thinner over time, since it has less moisture levels and is almost always parched. Since its hydration levels are low, it is susceptible to fine lines and a feeling of tightness. If you have dry skin, you might feel that your skin always looks and feels stretched. On the other hand, you might also experience looseness and wrinkles – you will need dry skin treatment to cure these problems.

Tip: Tank up on moisturiser. A good moisturiser is dry skin’s best friend. Think of it as the one ingredient that quenches your skin’s thirst. Those with dry skin need not worry about the moisturiser being too heavy or oil-based – their skin produces less sebum as compared to other skin types, so they will not be left with a ‘sheen’ on the face.

#2 Acne stays on for longer. It is a myth that those with dry skin do not suffer acne breakouts. Acne is not the exclusive domain of those with oily skin, though this type of skin has a higher propensity for acne and pimples. Even dry skin types may suffer from acne, but the problem is that the acne is often more stubborn. It takes more time to diminish in size and go away entirely. When it does, it almost always leaves terrible red scars on the skin.

Tip: Use homemade natural masks. Acne is often the product of too much oil or very little moisture. Most often, it is the result of low moisture levels and skin pollution. Make it a habit to use cleansing milk on your skin every day, first thing in the morning. Follow this up with moisturiser. The best thing to do to prevent the occurrence of acne and their scars, is to use homemade moisturising masks made of papaya/tomato/egg white/cucumber/honey. All of these are hydrating ingredients that restore the skin’s pH levels and prevent the occurrence of acne.

#3 Nothing works! This is another mystery that most dry skinned people face: nothing seems to work for long on their skin! They might discover a new serum, or prepare a new natural face pack, that seems to work for a while. But soon, their skin returns to its usual dull and sallow appearance. This just means that there is an underlying condition that needs a doctor’s attention.

Tip: Get a cosmetic makeover. Consult the best dermatologists and get a skin screening test done. The test can show the problems in your skin. The dermatologist can then suggest the best dry skin treatment uniquely suited to your skin’s needs.
