Excessive
sweating of the feet is linked to your genetics, but you can take some easy
precautions to prevent the problem from becoming an embarrassing one.
It may have happened to you before – when the weather turns
warmer, your feet start sweating profusely. You need to air them out many times
a day and stop wearing socks for a while. The sweating stops with the turn of
the weather – but what if it doesn’t? What if your feet sweat all the time,
irrespective of the season?
Some people have excessive foot perspiration at all
times, and the condition gets heightened when one is under stress, or if the
weather is warm, or if one is wearing closed shoes. The perspiration can
be so excessive in some cases, that the feet may slip around inside the shoes!
This is a condition known as ‘hyperhidrosis’, and it is often an inherited one.
Those suffering from hyperhidrosis also report heavy sweating of the palms, the
face, underarms and scalp.
It is best to seek your doctor’s help in controlling
hyperhidrosis. There is no permanent cure for the condition, though the
overactive sweat glands may be induced to calm down. While some amount of foot
sweat is normal, it is best to see your doctor if you find that your feet are
always sweaty, and that the skin on your feet has turned pale and soft owing to
the sweat.
People who suffer from excessive foot perspiration
are also susceptible to foot odours. This happens when the sweat is trapped on
the skin for a long time, and it begins to dry gradually. In the process, it
makes the shoes and socks also develop an odour.
How to deal with foot
sweats
Apart from taking the prescribed medication, there are some
easy fixes for foot perspiration.
Make these changes to your lifestyle for good results –
·
Dry the feet thoroughly after taking a shower,
especially the skin between the toes.
·
Use a medicated/antibacterial soap to clean the
feet twice a day. Apply a good foot powder to the dried feet.
·
If the problem is severe, you must apply a foot
spray to the feet twice a day. This keeps the feet relatively dry and also
eliminates foot odour.
·
Wear open footwear or closed canvas shoes with
cotton socks. Cotton and wool absorb sweat and keep the feet dry. But do carry
an extra change of socks in your bag.
·
Wear slippers or flip flops whenever you are
indoors, so that the skin can breathe.
·
Soak your feet in water with a bit of apple
cider vinegar or food vinegar added to it. This removes any harmful fungus that
may be lurking with the sweat on your feet.
·
Wear a fresh pair of socks every day and do not
wear the same shoes on two consecutive days.
