Your
feet take a lot of pressure every day. But regular care and good hygiene can
keep them in good health – and keep you happier as well.
We often don’t pay much attention to our feet, but they are
the hardest working part of the body. Any injury or infection in the feet is
capable of stopping you in your tracks. But instead of waiting for the feet to
signal that they need some rest, it is better to take care of them on a regular
basis. Besides, regular foot care is
recommended so that the feet remain healthy and keep your spirits up, too!
Try these essentials of good foot care for healthy, happy
feet:
ü
Do not wear high heeled shoes for long periods
of time. They arch the foot unnaturally and the feet are unable to distribute
your body weight. This causes pain, sprains, bunions and blisters.
ü
Wear a fresh pair of socks every day, and do not
wear the same pair of shoes on consecutive days. Let your shoes dry up
completely before you wear them again.
ü
Give your feet a massage once a week. Soak your
feet in warm water, use a foot scraper to remove dead and rough skin, and rub a
moisturising foot cream into the skin. Massage the toes, soles, arches, heels
and ankles in firm motions to stimulate blood circulation.
ü
Tight footwear can pinch the skin and cause
blisters, corns, cuts and bruises. They can also restrict blood circulation, so
stay away from them at all times.
ü
The toenails need special attention, because
they are vulnerable to fungal infections. Trim your toenails regularly but do
not make the edges rounded or you will get ingrown nails. Instead, cut the
nails flat and file the edges to get a smoother edge.
ü
Do not share socks and shoes with another person
– this is an unhygienic practice that can spread infections (like warts and
Athlete’s Foot) from one person to another.
ü
Always dry the feet thoroughly after your shower,
or when your feet get wet. Pay attention to the skin between the toes, because
most skin infections begin from damp skin between the toes. Apply a good foot
powder to keep the feet dry.
ü
Those suffering from sweaty or smelly feet must
wash their feet with antibacterial soap every day, and dry the feet thoroughly.
Follow this up with a foot spray to keep the feet fresh for long.
ü
Another good foot care practice is to clean the
feet to remove trapped dirt and sweat, and then apply a moisturising cream to hydrate
the dry skin.
ü
If too much exercise or even sitting at your
desk all day is giving you painful feet, then stop the activity for a while to
let the feet recover.
