Acne-free skin is yours for the asking if you unlock these seven habits to prevent their occurrence.
Is there anything as annoying and demoralising as a face full of acne? You might be undergoing treatment for acne, using the best dermatologically tested products – but still the acne recurs and mars your complexion. Have you considered that it is not the treatment for acne that is failing, but probably wrong behaviour on your part that is causing the problem?
Correct your acne problem with these simple secrets:
#1 Drink a lot of water. Water is the panacea to most skin-related issues. It serves many purposes for skin health: it cools the skin, regulates its temperature, supplies moisture to tissues, helps in creating sweat to remove toxins, etc. Low water intake normally translates into greasy, acne-ridden skin. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily.
#2 Get sufficient sleep. Insufficient sleep is often the gateway for a host of disorders, and the first to be affected are your skin and hair. While you sleep, the skin is able to repair and renew itself. When sleep is denied, the skin cells cannot be restored properly and the tissues cannot retain enough moisture. The result is acne and dull skin. Get at least seven hours of shut eye every night, away from any loud noises or bright lights.
#3 Eat fruit with Vitamin C and E. You are what you eat, and your skin bears testament to this fact. If you eat junk food and consume fizzy drinks, your skin reveals its lack of nutrition by developing acne and age lines. It is fine to indulge your cravings occasionally, but you must aim to consume a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables that contain Vitamins C and E. Have a diet of spinach, cucumber, lemon, oranges, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower for your daily dose of essential vitamins and minerals for clear skin.
#4 Don’t touch your face. It might be an innocuous habit, but it causes acne. We’re talking about touching your face often, especially if you feel a pimple coming along. The fingertips touch several surfaces in a single day – computer keyboards, door handles, telephones – and are rife with bacteria. Touching the face with contaminated fingertips transfers the bacteria to the face – creating a potential acne site.
#5 Wash the face with mild face wash. Keeping your face clean and free of a film of dirt and oil is a must if you want to prevent acne. But a few splashes of plain water are not enough – you must wash the face twice a day with a mild face washing foam or gel recommended by your dermatologist. The face wash rinses off any residues of dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt that can cause acne.
#6 Sweat it out daily. Exercise is a secret weapon against the formation of acne. When you exercise, the workout activates the sweat glands. Soon, you begin to sweat profusely – which is great for skin health, since the underlying toxins are removed with the sweat. Besides, exercise accelerates skin cell renewal and helps the skin lock in moisture.
#7 Avoid stressful situations. Stress is your skin’s biggest enemy. Too much stress can cause acne breakouts that take days to clear completely. You may not be able to avoid stress completely, but you can certainly mitigate it by meditating, listening to calming music, taking a 5-minute break when feeling overwhelmed, etc.
